Where these numbers come from
Two places, and we own both. The pay box at the top of this page reads live job ads on our board right now. The Tradesppl Hiring Index is our monthly count of every job posted on the board.
We never guess a wage. If a number is on this page, an employer put it in a job ad. Here is how we work the numbers out.
What August looked like
In our August 2026 Hiring Index, US plumbing jobs that named a wage paid $78,000 a year in the middle. Half paid more, half paid less. The middle half landed between $61,600 and $87,600, out of 74 ads. That is one of the best figures of any trade we track.
Texas was the second busiest place in North America with 204 trades jobs posted. About 26% of Texas ads named a wage, and Texas has no law making them (transparency report).
How the Texas ticket works
Texas licences plumbers one by one through the TSBPE:
- Apprentice and Tradesman. The registered starting levels. You earn a share of the licensed rate while you build your hours.
- Journeyman. The workhorse ticket. Most of the jobs behind the pay box above sit here.
- Master. You need it to run work and pull your own permits. Master and supervisor jobs sit at the top of the range.
Service and repair shops, new-build plumbing and industrial contractors all pay differently. Service shops with on-call rotation and commission often beat the advertised base.
What employers ask for
Plumbing ads lean on your licence level plus site-safety tickets. Of the ads that named a level, about 1 in 6 was open to an apprentice (who is hiring apprentices).
