Where these numbers come from
Two places, and we own both. The pay box at the top of this page reads live job ads on our board right now. The Tradesppl Hiring Index is our monthly count of every job posted on the board.
We never guess a wage. If a number is on this page, an employer put it in a job ad. Here is how we work the numbers out.
How busy Alberta is
Alberta was the busiest place in North America in our August 2026 index, with 301 trades jobs posted. Welding was the third-busiest trade on the board at 237 jobs.
Alberta welding is really several markets stacked on each other. Shop fab sits at the bottom. Structural steel pays more. Pipeline, rig and pressure work pay most. Rig welders who own their gear bill a day rate, so they never show up in wage figures at all.
Why Canadian pay is harder to pin down
Here is something most salary pages won't tell you. In our August 2026 Hiring Index, only 8.6% of Canadian trades job ads named a wage. In the US it was 42.1%.
Most provinces don't make employers put pay in the ad. Ontario's rule only started in January 2026, and only for shops with 25 or more staff. We track it in our pay transparency report.
That is why the pay box above sometimes pulls from listings right across Canada instead of one province. We would rather show you a small real number than a big made-up one. As more employers post wages, these figures sharpen on their own.
Your tickets are the ladder
In welding your tickets move your pay more than your years do:
- CWB tickets (all-position endorsements) — the single most-named welding credential in our postings: 35 welder postings asked for CWB in August alone (tickets employers ask for).
- B-Pressure — Alberta's premium ticket for pressure vessels and pipe; it reliably marks the top of the wage range.
- Journeyperson / Red Seal welder — optional certification in Alberta, but it travels and employers respect it.
Site tickets matter too
Alberta industrial sites check your safety tickets before they ever look at your welds. Fall protection, CSTS, confined space and H2S Alive are all among the most-asked-for tickets on our whole board. Having them ready is often the difference between mobilizing Monday and waiting two weeks.
