Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and motivated 313A Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic who also holds a valid G1 or G2 Gas Technician license.
This position will support both our HVAC Service Department and New Construction Division, providing installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of commercial and industrial HVAC/R and gas-fired equipment.
The successful candidate will be a skilled tradesperson who takes pride in quality workmanship, works safely and efficiently, communicates professionally with customers and project teams, and can work independently or as part of a larger construction team.
Key ResponsibilitiesService & Maintenance
• Diagnose, troubleshoot, service, and repair commercial and industrial HVAC/R systems.
• Perform scheduled preventative maintenance and equipment inspections.
• Troubleshoot refrigeration circuits, electrical controls, gas systems, motors, compressors, pumps, fans, sensors, and related components.
• Service rooftop units, make-up air units, air handling units, split systems, boilers, unit heaters, refrigeration equipment, and other HVAC systems.
• Diagnose equipment failures and determine appropriate repair solutions.
• Perform leak testing, evacuation, refrigerant charging, recovery, and system commissioning.
• Troubleshoot gas-fired equipment, including ignition, combustion, venting, controls, safeties, regulators, and gas pressures.
• Complete combustion analysis and equipment setup where required.
• Identify deficiencies and communicate recommended repairs or replacements to the Service Department.
• Provide accurate information for repair quotations, including required labour, materials, and equipment.
• Complete service reports, work orders, inspection documentation, and equipment records accurately and on time.
• Maintain a professional relationship with customers and clearly communicate equipment conditions and completed work.
• Participate in emergency and after-hours service/on-call rotation when required.
New Construction & Installation
• Install commercial HVAC/R equipment and associated systems in accordance with drawings, specifications, manufacturer requirements, and applicable codes.
• Install and connect rooftop units, make-up air units, air handling equipment, condensing units, refrigeration systems, boilers, unit heaters, and other mechanical equipment.
• Install refrigeration piping, condensate piping, gas piping, venting, controls, and associated HVAC components within the scope of applicable licenses.
• Read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, schematics, shop drawings, and equipment schedules.
• Coordinate installations with plumbing, electrical, sheet metal, controls, sprinkler, and other trades.
• Assist with equipment start-up, testing, balancing coordination, commissioning, and turnover.
• Verify equipment installations before start-up and identify deficiencies that could affect operation.
• Perform pressure testing, evacuation, dehydration, charging, and start-up of refrigeration systems.
• Perform start-up and commissioning of gas-fired equipment.
• Complete required commissioning sheets, start-up reports, and construction documentation.
• Work with forepersons, project managers, coordinators, general contractors, consultants, and manufacturers to resolve field issues.
• Assist with deficiency completion and project closeout.
• Ensure installations meet company quality standards and project schedules.
Safety Responsibilities
• Follow all company health and safety policies and procedures.
• Perform work in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations.
• Follow applicable refrigeration, gas, electrical, mechanical, and building codes and standards.
• Complete required hazard assessments and safety documentation.
• Use appropriate PPE and maintain safe work practices at all times.
• Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and required training.
• Immediately report unsafe conditions, incidents, equipment damage, and hazards.
• Maintain tools, equipment, and company vehicles in safe working condition.
• Ensure work areas are maintained in a clean, organized, and professional manner.
Required Qualifications
• Valid Ontario 313A Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic Certificate of Qualification.
• Valid G1 or G2 Gas Technician certificate.
• Valid ODP certificate.
• Strong knowledge of commercial HVAC/R equipment and refrigeration systems.
• Strong knowledge of gas-fired equipment and gas systems.
• Ability to read mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, control diagrams, and manufacturer documentation.
• Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic abilities.
• Experience using refrigeration and HVAC diagnostic tools.
• Valid Ontario driver's licence with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the trade.
Preferred Experience
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in:
• Commercial and industrial HVAC service.
• Large commercial new-construction projects.
• Rooftop units and make-up air systems.
• Boilers and hydronic heating systems.
• Building automation and HVAC controls.
• VRF/VRV systems.
• Commercial refrigeration.
• Equipment start-up and commissioning.
• Gas-fired equipment troubleshooting and combustion analysis.
