Position Summary
As an HVAC Installation and Start-up Technician, you'll take charge of installing, assembling, and commissioning commercial HVAC systems on construction projects. Your expertise in mechanical installation practices, along with your understanding of basic electrical concepts, will ensure that systems are started-up and operate according to design intent and manufacturer specifications.
Primary Objectives
• Install commercial HVAC systems adhering to project specifications and applicable codes.
• Conduct start-up, testing, and commissioning for HVAC equipment.
• Execute minor electrical work as necessary for HVAC installations.
• Support project schedules by delivering quality installations that meet or exceed industry standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Install HVAC equipment including air handling units, rooftop units, ductwork, VAV boxes, exhaust fans, and associated components.
• Set and align equipment; connect ductwork, refrigerant piping, and condensate piping as required.
• Read and interpret mechanical drawings, plans, and specifications for proper installation.
• Perform start-up and commissioning of HVAC systems, including:
• Verifying correct installation and connections
• Conducting pre-start-up inspections
• Energizing equipment and ensuring safe operation
• Adjusting controls and settings per specifications
• Recording system performance parameters for turnover
• Execute basic electrical work associated with HVAC equipment, such as:
• Replacing disconnects when necessary
• Disconnecting and reconnecting main power to the system, ensuring code compliance and safety
• Extending wiring as needed from disconnect to new equipment
• Communicate any installation issues or delays to the Field Supervisor or Project Manager.
• Maintain compliance with building codes, safety regulations, and company standards.
• Keep job sites clean and organized, adhering to all safety protocols.
• Offer basic on-site instruction and guidance to apprentices or helpers as needed.
Qualifications
• Minimum of 3 years of commercial HVAC installation experience.
• Strong understanding of HVAC system components, installation methodologies, and layouts.
• Experience with equipment start-up, commissioning, and adjustments.
• Basic electrical knowledge pertinent to HVAC installations.
• Aptitude for reading blueprints and mechanical drawings accurately.
• EPA 608 certification required for refrigerant handling.
• Familiarity with applicable codes and OSHA safety standards.
• Effective problem-solving and communication skills.
• Physical capability to lift heavy materials and equipment, and work in heights and confined spaces.
• Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
Work Environment
• Mostly work on active construction sites.
• Exposure to weather, heights, loud noises, and confined spaces may be necessary.
• Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times in accordance with company policy and site regulations.
