Job Description
## Welder Apprentice 1st
As a Welder Apprentice working in our Welding Department, you'll be at the heart of a high-paced production environment where precision and craftsmanship matter. Reporting directly to the Production Supervisor, you'll take on the fabrication of custom prototypes from supplied drawings, create custom jigs and fixtures that enable production parts to meet exact customer specifications, and fabricate metal structures using those fixtures.
Working alongside Supervisors and Lead Hands, you'll contribute to continuous improvements across work cells while meeting production quotas. Your welding expertise will span multiple processes—MIG, ARC, and TIG—all executed according to pre-set parameters that ensure quality and consistency.
### What You'll Do
You'll read, interpret, and review blueprints and welding process specifications, verifying that drawings and specifications will function properly in their intended environment. Operating both manual and semi-automatic welding equipment is core to this role. You'll master several welding processes including gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), plasma arc welding (PAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), oxy-acetylene welding (OAW), resistance welding, and submerged arc welding (SAW).
Beyond welding itself, you'll operate brazing, soldering, and manual or semi-automatic flame-cutting equipment. Metal shaping machines—brakes, shears, and metal straightening and bending equipment—will be part of your daily toolkit. When parts need repair, you'll weld on extra layers to restore them. Technical inspections, repairs, modifications, and retrofits are responsibilities you'll handle, along with monitoring parts usage and reporting any material issues that arise.
Accuracy and completion of assigned tasks and projects falls squarely on your shoulders. You'll keep detailed and accurate reports and documentation, and maintain working knowledge of changes in technology, compliance, and repair techniques. All work must adhere strictly to Silent
- Aire Limited Partnership safety program standards and Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations, and Code.
### Requirements
You must be registered as an Apprentice Welder in Alberta and enrolled in a recognized trade school. Working towards your Interprovincial Red Seal or CWB tickets is expected. Valid welding certifications in Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)—certified in all positions—are essential.
You need the ability to work under the supervision of Journeyperson Welders, as part of a cohesive team, and independently when required in a busy environment. Experience with routine maintenance operations is important, as is the capacity to communicate both verbally and in writing. Being able to work well under pressure with strong attention to detail will set you up for success here.

Always adhering to safety policies and wearing protective equipment is non-negotiable. Overtime as required, and you should be aware of hazards associated with the welding trade. Work occurs both indoors and outdoors, occasionally at heights, and you may be exposed to construction sites.
