Job Description

Pipefitter III Position Overview As a Pipefitter III, you'll operate as a journeyman-level expert in commercial mechanical service and installation, independently handling complex piping tasks for wet-side HVAC systems (hydronic heating, chilled water, steam, boilers, chillers, process piping) in buildings, hospitals, schools, and industrial facilities. With mastery knowledge of piping materials, codes, and system design, you'll troubleshoot advanced issues, perform high-precision fabrication/repairs, lead portions of jobs, and mentor junior pipefitters to ensure safe, code-compliant, and efficient outcomes. Our people-first culture recognizes your advanced skills with specialized training, leadership opportunities, mentorship from foremen, and the fulfillment of delivering reliable, sustainable piping systems that support critical commercial operations nationwide. Duties and Responsibilities * Independently plan, layout, fabricate, install, repair, and maintain complex piping systems, pipe supports, valves, strainers, pumps, boilers, chillers, and related equipment per blueprints, specifications, and codes. * Perform advanced troubleshooting, diagnostics, pressure testing, leak detection, system balancing, flushing, and repairs on hydronic, chilled/hot water, steam, and high-pressure systems. * Weld, braze, thread, cut, groove, and assemble piping materials (steel, copper, PVC, stainless, etc.) to precise standards with minimal supervision. * Lead standard to moderately complex service/repair/installation calls: assess on-site issues, communicate clearly with customers about problems/solutions/timelines, coordinate parts/materials, execute work, and follow up for satisfaction. * Read and interpret detailed blueprints, schematics, specifications, and as-builts to resolve field conflicts and ensure accurate execution. * Provide daily guidance, coaching, and technical direction to Pipefitter I and II team members; demonstrate techniques, share best practices, and support their development. * Document work thoroughly (work orders, service reports, photos, as-builts, recommendations) and maintain accurate records for billing, warranty, quality, and continuous improvement. * Enforce and promote the highest safety standards through daily hazard assessments, toolbox talks, mentoring on safe practices, and strict adherence to OSHA requirements and PPE usage. Supervisory Responsibilities Yes – Provides coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance to junior Pipefitters (Levels I–II); may act as first-level lead on jobsite sections or small crews, overseeing performance, safety, and task completion under the direction of a Foreman or Superintendent. Requirements/Qualifications * Experience: 5+ years of progressive hands-on commercial/industrial piping installation, repair, and maintenance experience (wet-side HVAC strongly preferred); proven journeyman-level proficiency in handling complex tasks with minimal supervision. * Education: High school diploma or GED required; trade school, apprenticeship completion, or equivalent preferred. * Certifications/Licenses: Valid journeyman pipefitter/plumber license (or ability to obtain in assigned jurisdiction) strongly preferred; welding/brazing certification (e.g., AWS) a plus; valid driver's license and clean driving record required; OSHA 30-hour certification encouraged (company support provided). * Physical Demands: Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding/stairs, work in confined spaces or at heights, bend/kneel/crouch, reach overhead, and use tools/equipment for extended periods; frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required. * Work Environment/Safety: Primarily field-based in commercial/industrial settings (indoor/outdoor, mechanical rooms, rooftops, varying weather); exposure to noise, dust, heights, welding hazards, chemicals, and confined-space risks; must strictly adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, harnesses, and steel-toed boots at all times—safety is our top priority and non-negotiable. This is a safety-sensitive position. Occasional regional travel within assigned market or on-call rotations may be required as business needs dictate. Required Skills * Mastery-level pipefitting techniques (welding/brazing, threading/grooving, layout, pressure testing, leak detection, system balancing). * Advanced blueprint/schematic reading, field troubleshooting, and code compliance (IPC/UPC, ASME, local regs). * Mentoring/coaching, effective communication with crews, customers, management, and inspectors. * Safety leadership (OSHA 30-hour preferred), documentation/reporting, multitasking, and independent decision-making in high-pressure situations. * Proficiency with pipefitting tools, diagnostic equipment, and digital reporting systems.
