Job Description
Electrical Service Technician
Ottawa
Monday-Friday, day shift
Job Description
Start your career in fire and life safety by working hands‑on alongside experienced technicians. This junior role is ideal for someone with basic electrical or maintenance experience who enjoys field work, learning on the job, and traveling to different sites.
What you'll do:
• Work with a Senior Technician to inspect and maintain fire alarm systems, extinguishers, emergency lighting, and fire hoses
• Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual inspections (ULC, NFPA, local fire codes)
• Help troubleshoot issues and perform minor repairs
• Document inspection results and report deficiencies
• Travel to client sites across Ottawa and nearby regions
• Follow safety procedures, including ladder and height work
Responsibilities
• Foundational electrical background, such as:
• Electrical or electronics diploma/certificate OR
• Hands‑on experience in an electrical, low‑voltage, controls, instrumentation, or building systems role
• Ability to understand electrical principles (voltage, circuits, continuity, components, safety practices)
• Experience working with tools, wiring, devices, or electrical equipment in a professional setting
• Comfortable using ladders, working at heights, and lifting up to 50 lbs
• Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word & Excel for documentation)
• Valid G‑class driver’s licence and reliable personal vehicle
• Able to follow instructions, work safely, and learn from Senior technicians
• Available Monday–Friday with some flexibility for occasional weekends
Additional Skills & Qualifications
• Diploma in Electrical, Electronics, or Electromechanical Technology
• Experience with low‑voltage systems (fire alarm, security, access control, building automation, CCTV, emergency lighting, etc.)
• Ability to read basic wiring diagrams, schematics, or service manuals
• Prior experience in fire alarm installation, inspection, or service
• Electrical troubleshooting experience (even at a basic or supervised level)
• Mechanical aptitude and comfort taking equipment apart and reassembling it
Why Work Here?
• Strong technical foundation: You’ll work directly with experienced fire alarm technicians who take the time to teach proper electrical practices, troubleshooting methods, and code‑compliant work — not just “check‑the‑box” inspections.
• Hands‑on learning from day one: This is a field‑based role where you actively work on real fire and life safety systems across commercial and industrial sites, building practical electrical and low‑voltage experience quickly.
• Team‑based environment: Technicians work in pairs and support each other in the field. The Ottawa team is small, collaborative, and focused on doing quality work safely.
• Consistent full‑time hours: Most technicians work between 35–45 hours per week, primarily Monday to Friday, with predictable schedules.
• Variety without chaos: You’ll see a wide range of sites and systems, but many contracts involve staying at the same location for weeks or months — allowing you to learn systems thoroughly.
• Clear expectations and growth potential: Performance is measured on reliability, safety, and technical development, with the opportunity to move into longer‑term or more advanced roles as skills grow.
• Mileage support: Mileage reimbursement is provided for travel beyond a defined distance, helping offset the use of your personal vehicle.
Work Environment
• Field‑based role supporting commercial and industrial sites across Ottawa and surrounding areas
• Monday to Friday schedule, with typical shifts such as 7:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. or 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. (occasional weekend work as required)
• Technicians work in pairs, providing built‑in support, safety, and mentorship
• You’ll drive directly from home to assigned job sites using your personal vehicle rather than reporting to an office daily
• Many projects involve working at the same client site for weeks or months, allowing you to learn systems in depth
