In compliance with Board policies and procedures, standard operating practices, and applicable legislation, a Plumber is primarily responsible for the repairs, replacement and maintenance of buildings and components within the Plumber restricted trade. Employee must hold and maintain a valid compulsory Plumber trade license in good standing.
Current Allowance Rates
• Additional $.48 per hour for
applicable approved trade licenses
Additional $.99 per hour for
using an applicable approved trade license
Salary Range: $40.76 to $42.03
(Allowance included; upon receipt of Cross Connection Certification)
Major Responsibilities
• To respond to work orders as it relates to the Plumber position through the Work Order Management system (plumbing fixtures, pipe types and sizing, fittings, valves, drains, pumps, hot-water tanks, dishwashers, wells, hand washing and bottle filling stations, filters, backflow preventers, etc.).
• To investigate, repair, replace, install, maintain, test, troubleshoot, and report issues with buildings and components as it relates to the Plumber position, in accordance with Board policies, procedures, regulated standards and codes, including Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Ontario Building codes (OBC), National Plumbing Code (NPC), Municipal By-Law and environmental protection requirements.
• To work with blueprints, diagrams, technical specification, mechanical drawings, electronic and electrical schematics including taking measurements, preforming calculation, providing layouts, and drawing up plans for proposed work.
• To calculate and measure dimensions including plumbing fixture unit calculations.
• To perform Code Compliance Inspections and regular maintenance and repairs (backflow preventers, storm, sanitary, and water systems including cleaning components, changing filters, and testing for leaks, etc.) as it relates to the Plumber position, in accordance with regulatory standards and local codes.
• To order and maintain an adequate stock of replacement parts and materials, including the purchase of fuel, in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
• To use, maintain, and arrange for repairs of equipment including hand tools, power tools, acetylene torches, diagnostic tools, hammer drills, and vehicles, as it relates to the Plumber position, in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
• To use various forms of technology and software to complete and document as per standard operating practices, logs, work orders, digital forms and spreadsheets, expense reports, service reports, and backflow testing forms in accordance with Board policies and procedures, municipality by-laws, codes, and standards.
• To work independently and collaboratively as part of the maintenance team.
• To portray a positive public image, and liaise as necessary, with Board staff, system partners, and the general public.
• To adhere to all laws and regulations under the Highway Traffic act while driving a Board vehicle.
• To inform supervisor of any issues related to ordering new products and equipment, replacing components, and suppliers or contractors performing work in buildings.
• To inform supervisor of potential on-site hazards, in compliance with health and safety procedures, including obtaining hot work permits.
• To assist supervisor with preparation of estimates for labour and material costs, and sourcing materials.
• To perform work at heights using elevated platforms, ladders, lifts and/or scaffolding, as per safety standards.
• To maintain clean, safe worksite environments, ensuring compliance with use of safety equipment, protocols and procedures.
• To attend meetings, participate in training and professional development, including annual license and certification renewal requirements.
• To maintain current knowledge and understanding of all related codes and standards as it relates to this position.
• To support Board initiatives and trades outside of the Plumber portfolio as required.
• To provide training to Apprentices and co-op students, as required.
• To perform other duties, as assigned.
Line Of Responsibility
Directly reports to the Supervisor of Maintenance and Trades (SoMT) and may receive additional guidance with Supervisor?s approval from a management delegate.
Education, Experience And Qualifications
• Secondary School Graduation Diploma is required.
• Valid compulsory Plumber Journey Person (306A) Certificate of Qualification
trade license from Skilled Trades Ontario is required.
• A Cross Connections Control Specialist certification (O.W.W.A.) is preferred
and must be obtained within the first six months of employment with
the Board. Maintaining a valid recertification every five years is a
condition of continued employment.
• Minimum 5 years of licenced Plumber experience is required.
• On-the-job learning in Cross-Connection Control, Backflow and Well Certification,
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), First Aid and
CPR, Working at heights, and other Board approved training is required.
• Knowledge of codes, regulations, and building maintenance, as it relates to the
Plumber position is required, including Ontario Building Code and
Municipal by-laws.
• Familiarity with Facility Maintenance software e-Base, and Material Safety Data Sheets
(MSDS).
• Having and maintaining a valid driver?s license and clean drivers abstract is
required. Board vehicle drivers are required to act responsively and
respectfully to others on the road.
• Effective verbal and written communication, organizational, interpersonal and

• Required to drive between YRDSB Locations.
• Exposure to a variety of biological fluids, chemicals, hazardous conditions and
substances, noise, odours, mold, fumes, and gases.
• Physically demanding work, heavy lifting, working at heights, awkward spaces,
vibrations, and outdoors.
• Mandatory use of personal protective equipment as it relates to the Plumber position
(safety glasses, boots and gloves, hearing protection, vapour and dust
masks, harnesses, and hard hats, etc.).
