Position Summary
The HVAC Service Apprentice works alongside experienced commercial HVAC service technicians to learn the fundamentals of preventive maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, repair, and equipment start-up on commercial and industrial HVAC systems. This is an entry-level role designed to build technical competence, professional habits, and industry knowledge in a structured, hands-on environment. Apprentices follow a standard Monday–Friday schedule, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM, with overtime opportunities available. Participants receive a company vehicle, uniforms, tools, a tablet, and ongoing formal training.
Core Responsibilities
Preventive Maintenance & Inspections
• Assist experienced technicians with scheduled PM on commercial and industrial HVAC equipment — RTUs, AHUs, heat pumps, fan coils, and hydronic systems — per manufacturer specs and industry standards
• Learn and perform belt adjustments, lubrication, filter replacement, coil cleaning, and basic equipment servicing under supervision
• Document equipment condition, deficiencies, and recommendations via MOAC's Xoi and NetSuite ERP platforms using voice, photo, and video capture
Diagnostics & Repair Support
• Observe and assist with mechanical and electrical troubleshooting under the direct supervision of a qualified technician
• Learn to interpret wiring diagrams and equipment documentation
• Assist with repairs including component replacement under close technician supervision
Equipment Start-Up Support
• Assist with factory start-up and commissioning activities per manufacturer requirements and technician direction
• Learn proper documentation procedures for start-up reports and work orders
Documentation, Compliance & Safety
• Submit accurate work order documentation via Xoi and NetSuite under technician guidance
• Adhere to all OSHA, MOAC driving, and site safety policies; apply PPE, LOTO procedures, and electrical safety protocols at all times
• Report safety incidents, near-misses, or hazards immediately to the supervising technician or Service Manager
• Maintain a clean, organized truck and job site at all times

Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
• High school diploma or GED required
• Enrollment in or completion of an HVAC vocational program, community college HVAC program, or registered apprenticeship preferred
• 0–2 years of HVAC-related work or trade school experience; motivated career changers with relevant mechanical aptitude will be considered
Licenses & Certifications
• Valid Ohio driver's license with clean driving record required
• OSHA 10 required (or must complete within first 90 days of employment)
• EPA Section 608 certification a plus; support provided to obtain
Technical Skills & Attributes
• Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn electrical and refrigeration fundamentals
• Ability to follow detailed instructions and ask clarifying questions
• Proficient or willing to learn digital work order systems, tablets, and field service mobile applications
• Reliable, punctual, and committed to professional conduct in customer facilities
Physical Requirements
• Ability to work in diverse field conditions (rooftops, equipment rooms, confined spaces, all weather); climb, crawl, stoop, kneel; lift up to 75 lbs
• Flexibility for overtime and occasional weekends
• Must pass pre-employment background check and drug screening
Preferred Qualifications
• HVAC vocational coursework or trade school certificate
• Hands-on mechanical experience (automotive, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or similar)
• Bilingual a plus
Training & Development
MOAC's apprenticeship experience is structured to grow your skills from day one. Apprentices receive a minimum of two weeks of formal training annually through manufacturer factory training, vendor and in-house continuing education, online resources, and on-the-job mentoring by senior technicians. MOAC provides tuition reimbursement for industry-related courses taken outside normal business hours and actively supports EPA certification and NATE exam preparation.
